In mijn 3dejaar van mijn opleiding kreeg ik de opdracht om een paviljoen te ontwerpen voor Willem de Kooning Academy. Wat de opdracht ingewikkeld maakte was, dat ze nog niet echt wisten wat ze wilden en was de identiteit van de WDKA niet helder. Hiervoor heb ik een eigenverhaal geschreven, het verhaal van Willem de Kooning hem zelf, hoe zijn roots in de academie zijn gevestigd en dat wij als studenten doorgroeien en aan zijn roots omhoogklimmen. De identiteit van Willem de Kooning Academy is dus naar mijn idee, de studenten, docenten, directie, afgestudeerde en misschien zelf jij? Het ontwerp is geïnspireerd op een boom, dat Willem de Kooning en de Academy symboliseert. Het bestaat 3 delen, elk deel representeert een richting in waar een student afstudeert, autonoom, social of commercieel. Op dit ontwerp, de boom, wordt met behulp van videomapping de werkstukken van studenten geprojecteerd, zodat wij de boom, Willem de Kooning laten bloeien.

The origins of Willem (part1)

 

In 1998 Willem planted the seed of the future and out of that seed grew a solid tree and in time it will reach the sky and kiss the stars. As the tree grows stronger there will be more branches and more flowers. Today it waves in the wind and moves with the soft breeze of change, with its roots deep, deep into the philosophy of Willem. There is nothing that feeds it more than the students from within. The tree comes to life and we are his blooming flowers. We let the tree flourish and we make the flowers beautiful with our shiny creations.  

 

But who is Willem? (part2)

 

Willem is friendly and he feels like family

He is dynamic and ambitious

He creates and discovers things

He is a researcher and an inventor

Willem thinks differently

He shares knowledge, connections and solutions

He builds the future and he loves working together

 

Willem is autonomous, commercial and social

 

Willem created the strongest bonds

Friendships and the best memories

It’snot just drinks or parties, it’s a way of life 

Willem gave me a chance, an identity

 

But Willem, is not perfect…

 

Willem is A misfit, a rebel and a troublemaker  

Willem is being told that he becomes a failure

He is being told how this was stupid, wrong and not good for you

Willem asks for a lot of time and that keeps you awake at night 

He is hard to handle sometimes 

He’s critical and a perfectionist and he is asking for a lot of money 

However, Willem is the one who sees things differently 

You can quote him, disagree with him, glorify or vilify him

 

But the only thing you can’t do is ignore him

 

Willem is the one who can bring nations and nations of all together

You may be black, you may be white

You may be Jew or Gentile

It doesn’tmake a difference in Willems house

Willem is a universal language, spoken and understood by all

Willem is a feeling that no one seems to understand 

 

He wants the best out of you, and Willem pushes you into that direction

Willem gives you courage and objectives

Relief when you are upset and when you are tired

Willem is different and you have to live with that

Find your way through it, and once you figure it out 

Willem… will always be there for you 

And together you will make beautiful things

While some may see him as a crazy one

Willem is the seed, the tree and the creator

And now 19 years later, we are still growing on the roots and philosophy of Willem

Willem is still growing and we let Willem flourish more than ever before

The tree is never finishedand it waves in the wind 

And moves with the soft breeze of change

 

Willem always said, ‘we have to change to stay the same’

 

Now you know the roots and philosophy of Willem

So I can show you the pavilion

It’s like a blooming flower

 

But where are the shining creations? 

Before I show it to you, you have to imagine something

Imagine that you are standing in front of this pavilion

When you look around you will see other people watching and admire the pavilion

People are loving it and are talking against each other 

It gets busier around you and suddenly…

There was darkness…

The pavilion is a seamless design, with 3 different areas that represent the practises 

With the use of video mapping, you can present whatever you want on the pavilion 

When you walk around you will see the constantly changing pavilion  

Like Willem said earlier, ‘We have to change to stay the same’

There is place for events, speeches, an art gallery and of course parties 

On the floor, you see different sizes of round holes

You can put there some work in, like models, art, prototypes, sketches ect. 

It’s like the memorial library on Berlin’s Bebelplatz.
